There's no universal answer to the question “which tool should I buy first?” I've made that mistake enough times to stop believing in a perfect shopping list.

It buys you a concrete workflow: read the fault, check the live data, confirm the fix before you sell it. That's harder to do when you're guessing from code definitions.
For battery and electrical work, the V2200 is the jump pack that stays on our shop bench. If you service golf carts or light utility vehicles, a torque wrench is a core tool, not an accessory. Here's the simple checklist I run before any tool purchase now:
- What does my revenue depend on most? If it's diagnostics and fault-finding, the scan tool comes first. If it's tire and battery work, the support tools need equal attention.
- How long can a task wait? If customers are physically waiting, anything that keeps a bay moving — jump pack, charger, compressor — earns its keep.
- What happens if this tool fails on the first critical job? Is the cost more than the price of the reliable option? If yes, buy the reliable option.
- Am I buying for the work I do, or the work I wish I did? That's the trap that got me into specialty purchases before the basics were solid.
A note on limits: my experience comes from independent workshops and mobile service work, not dealer-level facilities.
